Unlock Diagnostic Confidence: Highlights from Our Recent Veterinary Abdominal Ultrasound Training!
We recently hosted an insightful veterinary abdominal ultrasound training March 10-12, 2026, at our outpatient imaging center in Waukesha, WI. This training is designed to empower practitioners and veterinary technicians with advanced diagnostic skills for small animals. These sessions, part of our ongoing commitment to high-quality ultrasound training, offered a deep dive into systematic scanning techniques, critical decision-making, and practical application in a clinical setting.
"The training course was easy to understand, not intimidating, and allowed for a large amount of hands on practice. The staff is amazing." - Dr. Richard Otto, St Charles Veterinary Clinic, St. Charles, IL
What We Explored: A Comprehensive Abdominal Journey
Our instructors guided attendees through a comprehensive exploration of the canine and feline abdomen, covering a wide array of organs and pathologies. The lectures emphasized a systematic approach to ensure thorough evaluation and diagnostic accuracy.
Key areas of focus included:
- Liver & Hepatobiliary System: Mastering the "Two Sections, Two Planes" approach for complete liver evaluation, optimizing image quality by visualizing the diaphragm, and understanding the nuances of hepatobiliary conditions, including critical decision-making for gallbladder mucoceles. We even discussed how to integrate ultrasound findings with clinical signs and blood work for optimal patient management.
- Spleen, Pancreas & Adrenal Glands: Detailed descriptions of normal and pathological appearances, sonographic features, and diagnostic criteria for conditions like splenic lymphoma, hemangiosarcoma, pancreatitis, and adrenal disorders such as Addison's and Cushing's disease. A particular emphasis was placed on the challenging yet achievable goal of visualizing both adrenal glands every time.
- Gastrointestinal Tract: Techniques for evaluating the stomach, including the pylorus, jejunum, ileum, ICCJ, colon, and the duodenum. Attendees learned to identify the distinct wall layering changes at the pylorus-duodenum junction, a highly valuable skill for diagnosing conditions like vomiting, elevated liver enzymes, and foreign body obstructions.
- Kidneys & Urinary Bladder: Step-by-step instructions for visualizing the left and right kidneys, including probe positioning and fanning techniques. We also covered urinary bladder pathologies and the importance of examining the cystourethral junction (CUJ), a common site for hidden pathologies.
- Incidental Findings: The lectures highlighted how a thorough abdominal scan can lead to incidental discoveries of thoracic pathology, such as B-lines, pleural effusion, or even lung nodules, by properly visualizing the diaphragm.

Beyond the Scan: Building Efficiency and Confidence
Our training goes beyond just identifying structures. We focused on practical skills to enhance clinical efficiency and diagnostic confidence. Attendees learned to:
- Achieve a 15-25 Minute Full Scan: Mastering techniques to perform comprehensive abdominal ultrasounds efficiently, crucial for busy clinic schedules.
- Proficiently Use Both Hands: Optimizing image quality and workflow by effectively utilizing both the probe hand and the machine controls.
- Integrate Findings: Combining ultrasound observations with clinical signs and blood work to make informed medical or surgical decisions.
- Gain Overall Confidence: The ultimate goal is for participants to feel confident in interpreting their scans or submitting cases for expert review.
